1. Giới thiệu chung
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
- stop vừa là nội động từ vừa là ngoại động từ
- stop doing sth hoặc stop to do sth
- Stop + v-ing: Chấm dứt một hành động nào đó
- Stop + to-infinitive: Dừng hành động đang làm để làm một hành động khác.
2. Phân biệt
2.1. "stop ving"dừng hẳn việc gì đó, không làm việc gì đó nữa, chấm dứt không tiếp tục làm
=We use the -ing form after stop to indicate that an action or event is no longer continuing
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- It’s stopped raining.
Let’s go for a walk. (It was raining, but not any more.)
We’ve stopped using plastic bags in supermarkets.
Stop nagging! (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Hãy thôi cằn nhằn đi!)
We take our own bag with us now when we go shopping.
I stop to make a phone call. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Tôi dừng lại để gọi điện thoại.)
We stop to go to have dinner. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Chúng tôi dừng lại để đi ăn tối.)
2.2."stop to verb" dừng lại 1 hành động để làm việc gì đó khác (dừng lại để uống nước, dừng chân để nhìn cái gì đó)
=We use the to-infinitive after stop to indicate that someone stops doing something in order to do something else/If someone does not stop to think or to explain, they continue with what they are doing without taking any time to think about or explain it.

- On the way to Edinburgh, we stopped to look at an old castle. (We were travelling, then we stopped our journey in order to look at the castle.)
We stopped to have something to eat.
She doesn't stop to think about what she's saying.
There is something rather strange about all this if one stops to consider it.
