I. Expense vừa là danh từ đếm được, không đếm được

II. Cách dùng
1. Mang nghĩa "phụ phí, công tác phí"
(money that you spend when you are doing your job, that your employer will pay back to you)

- Với nghĩa này, Expense ở hình thức số nhiều
- put something on expenses (=charge it to your employer)
- plus expenses
- reimburse expenses
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- I need to get my expenses approved.
- The company pays all our expenses.
- Let me pay – I can put it on expenses.
- Your salary will be £50,000 a year, plus expenses.
- All reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
- Don't worry about the cost of lunch - it's on expenses

2. Mang nghĩa "sự chi tiêu, đắt đỏ, giá trị cao"
(the use of money, time, or effort/the high cost of something)

- Với nghĩa này, Expense là danh từ không đếm được
- expense of
- go to great/considerable etc expense (=spend a lot of money)
- go to the expense of doing something (=spend money on doing something)
- put someone to the expense of doing something (=make someone spend money on doing something)

- Buying a bigger car has proved to be well worth the expense.
- We've just had a new garage built at great expense.
- A powerful computer is worth the expense if you use it regularly.
- the expense and inconvenience of recovering cargo from sunken ships
- His parents went to great trouble and expense to make sure the party was a success.
- We didn’t want to go to the expense of sending a courier.
- That little mistake put us to the expense of reprinting the whole book.
3. Mang nghĩa "chi phí, cái mà hàng tháng phải tốn tiền để duy trì cuộc sống hay cái gì đó..."
(something that makes you spend money/the cost of something, especially something that is necessary or desirable but not necessarily profitable.)
