I. Cách dùng "BESIDE, BESIDE THAT & BESIDES"

1. Cách dùng BESIDES

1.1. Giới thiệu chung

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

  • Besides có thể được dùng với 2 chức năng ngữ pháp 
    1. Giới từ (preposition): besides + noun: Did you talk to anyone else besides Joan?
    2. Trạng từ liên kết (linking adverb): không + noun: I’ve read all the books on the list and a few others besides hoặc I don’t want to go shopping. Besides, I haven’t got any money.

1.2. Cách dùng

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

  • BESIDES: nghĩa là hơn nữa; vả lại (also, in addition to someone or something else that is being mentioned)

1.2.1. Dùng besides như preposition (giới từ)

  • besides being/doing something

  • A lot of them are studying other things besides Italian.

  • Besides making money, the company aims to set high standards of quality and design.
  • the play was badly acted , besides being too long (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: vở kịch đóng rất dở, chưa kể là còn quá dài nữa)

1.2.2. Dùng besides như linking adverb (trạng từ liên kết)

  • I haven't time to see the film - besides , it's had dreadful reviews (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Tôi chẳng có thời gian xem bộ phim ấy, hơn nữa nó cũng đã bị giới điểm phim chê kinh khủng)
  • She won't mind if you're late - besides, it's hardly your fault.
  • I don’t think going for a walk is a good idea. It’s quite cold, and, besides, it’s getting late and we don’t want to be out in the dark.
  • There are cakes and sandwiches, and lots more besides. 
  • Peter is our youngest child, and we have three others besides (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Peter là cháu nhỏ nhất của chúng tôi và ngoài ra, chúng tôi còn có ba cháu nữa)

2. Cách dùng BESIDE

2.2. Cách dùng

2.2.1. Dùng để chỉ vị trí bên cạnh

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

  • BESIDE: nghĩa là nằm ở bên cạnh = next to = ‘at the side of’

  • Our school was built right beside a river.
  • I keep a dictionary beside me when I'm doing crosswords (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Tôi luôn có một quyển từ điển bên cạnh khi chơi ô chữ)
  • He would like to take a photograph of us. Would you come and sit beside me? 
  • There was a small table beside the bed, on which there was a book.
  • “You can have as many hospital beds as you want, but if you don't have a nurse beside that bed, it's just a bed,” Jackson said.

  • Who’s that standing beside Jeff? 
  • I knelt down beside the bed. 
  • We found a picnic area down beside the river.

2.2.2. Dùng để chỉ sự so sánh, đối xứng

= used for comparing two people or things / compared with somebody/something

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

  • pale beside sth / sbpale in comparison with sth / sb = lép vế / thua xa khi so với cái gì (To be or seem less important, impressive, or otherwise deficient when compared to someone or something else)

    • I thought I was badly treated but my experiences pale beside yours = I thought I was badly treated but my experiences pale in comparison with yours 
    • Beside your earlier work , this piece seems rather disappointing (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: So với công trình của anh trước đây, tác phẩm này dường như làm cho người ta thất vọng)
    • All of my siblings are surgeons, so I always feel like my career in art pales beside theirs. 
    • Our work pales beside the things our predecessors created.

    3. Cách dùng BESIDE THAT

    IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

    • Có thể nhớ mẹo beside that = BESIDE THAT POINT để  nhớ dùng beside chứ không phải besides nhé

    Beside vs Besides

    • Beside sẽ formal hơn besides
    • Beside that = Besides (với nghĩa vả lại, hơn thế nữa - Moreover) nhưng Beside that sẽ formal hơn Besides
    • Beside được dùng như giới từ (preposition), phải + noun với 2 nghĩa chỉ vị trí (bên cạnh) & khi so sánh đối chứng 
    • Besides được dùng như giới từ (preposition) và trạng từ liên kết (linking adverb) mang nghĩa "vả lại, bên cạnh đó" (moreover, in addition (to))
    • Dùng Beside that, không bao giờ dùng Besides that

    • I have a small bag beside my bookshelf. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Tôi có một chiếc túi nhỏ bên cạnh giá sách Beside = Next to = By = Near = At the side of: ở kế bên, bên cạnh)
    • My painting looks childish beside yours (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: so với anh thì bức vẽ của tôi chỉ là trẻ con, cùi bắp)
    • Besides being a teammate, he’s my friend. 
    • It’s too late to invite any more people. Besides, you know how Tim hates parties.
