I. Dùng "understanding" như noun
1. "understanding" là danh từ đếm được nếu mang nghĩa "sự đồng thuận"
"an informal agreement between people"

- It took several hours of discussion before they could come to/reach an understanding
- to come to /reach an understanding with somebody (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: đạt được thoả thuận sơ bộ với ai)
- there is an understanding between us that we will not sell to each other's customers (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: chúng tôi thoả thuận sơ bộ với nhau rằng bên này sẽ không bán hàng cho khách của bên kia)
2. "understanding" là danh từ không đếm được
2.1. Mang nghĩa "hiểu biết, kiến thức"
knowledge about a subject, situation, etc. or about how something works

- She doesn't have any understanding of politics/human nature/what it takes to be a good manager.
- My understanding of the agreement (= what I think it means) is that they will pay $50,000 over two years.
2.2. Mang nghĩa "sự hiểu nhau; sự thông cảm"
a positive relationship between two people or groups in which they feel sympathy for each other

- For peace to exist in the region there needs to be a much improved understanding between all the parties concerned.
- no real understanding between husband and wife (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: không có sự thông cảm thực sự giữa vợ và chồng)
II. Dùng "understanding" như adj, mang nghĩa "cảm thông"
