II. Cách dùng
1. Mang nghĩa "thanh toán, trả tiền"
=to give money in order to buy something / to give money to someone who does a job for you / to give a company, institution etc money that you owe them

- pay for
- pay someone for something
- pay by
- pay with
- pay in dollars/pounds etc
- pay (in) cash
- pay someone for something

- Let me pay for dinner.
- Can I pay you for this?
- Will you be paying by cash, cheque, or credit card?
- I’d like to pay with my card.
- Can I pay in dollars?
- There’s a reduction if you pay cash.
- Can I pay the bill, please?
- she paid the blackmailer a ransom for her personal papers (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: bà ta nộp tiền cho tên tống tiền để chuộc lại giấy tờ tùy thân của bà ta)
- We still haven’t paid them for the repairs to the roof.
- We had to pay them over £100 to sort it out.
- Now I’ll have to pay to get the car fixed.
- We’ll probably pay more in tax this year.
- Did you pay the gas bill?
- Some of the workers haven’t been paid for weeks.
2. Mang nghĩa "cho (lãi...), mang (lợi...)"
=if a job pays a particular amount of money, you get that amount for doing it / if a business pays, it earns money / to have a good result it pays to do something

3. Mang nghĩa "trả giá cho việc đã làm"
=to suffer because of something that you have done

- pay dearly for something (=suffer a lot because of something)
- make someone pay (for something)

- She had ruined his life and now he was going to make her pay.
